The following information is from the National Catholic Register, A Cookie Boycott and a Bishop's Ban, by Barb Ernster:

  • In Connecticut, the Girl Scouts honored a Planned Parenthood official for promoting  “healthy practices” in local troops.

  • In Pennsylvania, three Girl Scout councils state on internet sites that Planned Parenthood is invited as guest speakers to talk to Junior Girl Scouts and these talks make up the majority of the effort the girls need for a special “Becoming a Teen” badge.

In May of 2003 the Girl Scouts’ Bluebonnet Council in Waco, Texas, designated as a  “Woman of Distinction” the executive director of Planned Parenthood of central Texas. A sexuality conference in Waco, Texas, entitled “Nobody’s Fool” was co-sponsored between the Girl Scout Bluebonnet Council and Planned Parenthood.  This conference has been sponsored by the Bluebonnet Council for nine years and targets girls in grades seven through nine.  Pro-life Waco has stated that the national Girl Scout logo was on the program flyer and advertisements and Girl Scout employees served as volunteers for the program.  A book titled It’s Perfectly Normal, that is recommended for ages 10 and up, was given away.  Topics included in this book include 9 reasons to have an abortion, including:
  • if the parents didn’t have enough time or money to take “good care” of a baby
  • if the parents felt too young to be parents
  • if the girl or woman simply didn’t want to become pregnant

Written documentation that was obtained from GSUSA website, www.girlscouts.org:

All local Girl Scout council stores in the USA purchase all uniforms, books, badges etc…. from Girls Scouts of USA.  As documented from the Better Business Bureau in the year September 30, 2006 – October 1, 2007, GSUSA merchandise sales totaled $17,942,000.

The American Life League states that in Omaha, Nebraska, in mid-2004, the Great Plains Girl Scout Council appointed the former Vice President of Marketing of Planned Parenthood of Nebraska, Beverly Todd Nolte, as their executive director.  In January 2004, Ms. Nolte defended a Planned Parenthood program that informed teens on how they could bypass Nebraska’s parental notification law.  In the Omaha World –Herald on January 11, 2004, Ms. Nolte is quoted as stating:  “We see it as an issue of information teens need to have, we’re standing up for teens’ rights.”

The website of the Colorado Girl Scouts lists among its 2004 Women of Distinction Ms. Susan Damour, who has served as Senior Vice President - Internal and External Affairs at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

The American Life Leagues’ STOPP (Stop Planned Parenthood) International conducted a survey in which every Girl Scout Council was asked if they had any type of relationship with Planned Parenthood.  Out of 315 Girl Scout Councils only 99 would respond to this question.  Of those 99 respondents, 23 councils from around the country admitted that they have a relationship with Planned Parenthood.  The following is a list of states that these 23 councils are in, with some states having more than one council with ties to Planned Parenthood.  It is not known how many other states have councils with ties to Planned Parenthood that refused to respond to this survey.
